We hear that temperatures in Boston reached 87 degrees yesterday – heating up just about the same time as 6′ 9″ Zdeno Chara and the rest of the Bruins landed at Vancouver International Airport, for games one and two of the Stanley Cup Finals.

It’s not just about the coffee!
Around here, we like to start out the day with a coffee – and for me, that usually means grabbing a cup of Starbucks before hopping the Seabus each morning. Missouri
The heart-wrenching stories emerging following the devastating storms in the U.S. this week are felt beyond state and international boundaries. They touch us all.
Reports we’ve seen indicate the storm that swept through Joplin, Missouri was the deadliest single tornado in 60 years. According to the Huffington Post, here are links to suggested ways we can help.
One of the agencies whose focus is on Joplin just now is the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). In addition, we note that the Red Cross is actively involved. Their site also holds tips and reminders for thinking Safety this Memorial Day Weekend.
What a Night!
The Vancouver Canucks defeated the San Jose Sharks in dramatic fashion last night to reach the Stanley Cup Finals! The Canucks tied it up with just 14 seconds remaining, and fortunately there were enough provisions in the packed Dakeryn suite to last us all until (well-beyond?) the double overtime winner. It was a game for the ages – and an unforgettable night for all in attendance!

Game 5
Tonight’s the night! Up 3-1 in their best-of-seven Western Conference Final, the Vancouver Canucks look to eliminate the San Jose Sharks from the NHL playoffs. There’s no doubt as we speak, staff at Rogers Arena are busily making final preparations in the Dakeryn suite, where 24 of us will soon be cheering. We hope to see the Canucks clinch their place in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1994. The beards are ready!
Fire fall-out
In the aftermath of the big fire May 3rd in Richmond (originally posted here), fire safety, where multi-storey wood-frame construction is concerned, has been called into question. In response, The Canadian Wood Council has released a statement here… and President and CEO Peter Simpson, of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association, offers his take here.
World will end Saturday?
Though some supporting fans in certain sports have been known to predict the end of the world if a particular team doesn’t “Win it all!” there is a preacher in New York, we’re told here, who has predicted that the world will end tomorrow – even before NBA and NHL playoffs reach the finals.
Around our office, the Dakeryn beards being shaped just now are counting on our universe unfolding as it will well beyond Saturday. Besides, we have an order file and good customers counting on us to be here after the weekend!
Playoff Beards
In support of the Vancouver Canucks playoff run, razors were officially outlawed here at the Dakeryn office effective May 11th. Shaves are shelved until the Canucks either win the Stanley Cup, or are eliminated from this year’s NHL playoffs.
The photos taken today indicate progress (or lack there of) on day seven. We’ll all look the playoff part at least, when Dakeryn hosts a private suite for game 5 of our best-of-seven conference final vs San Jose in Vancouver May 24th (if neccessary).

Time Charter
The Cielo di San Francisco
To help offset export container shortages and increase shipping capacity, four BC majors have partnered to charter a vessel.
Seven round-trips are planned for the next year, which would bring a total of 175 million board feet of lumber to China – about 3 per cent of the wood B.C. will send to China in 2011. To put the export growth in perspective, the 175 million board feet is more than the amount of wood B.C. exported to China in all of 2005.
Annual Lumberman of the Year Roast!
In naming John Bennett of Norman G. Jensen as this year’s recipient of the BC Wholesale Lumber Association’s Lumberman of the Year Award, the BCWLA follows a tradition of recognizing individuals who have made a significant contribution to the lumber industry in BC.
Since the BCWLA began staging annual Lumberman of the Year Roasts in 1980, there have been 28 recipients so honored. John Bennett has a long family history in the lumber and brokerage industries, with a fine record of support for the BCWLA.
I look forward to a fun evening at the prestigious Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, where this year’s event will be staged June 9th. A special evening all ’round when, for the first time, a woman roastmaster, Dawn-Ann Byers, will direct the evening’s barbs.
